Understanding Your Effluent Disposal Field in Alabama

Quick answer: Alabama calls it the effluent disposal field (EDF) — the area into which treated sewage is dispersed into soil. It’s the most expensive part to replace, and what your site can support is decided by percolation rate, bedrock depth, seasonal saturation and mining history, all of which are spelled out in Rule 420-3-1-.25.

What It Does

The tank separates solids from liquid. The disposal field does the treatment. Under 420-3-1-.04(33), the EDF is a minimum area as calculated per these rules into which sewage treated to at least Primary Effluent Standards is dispersed into the soil.

Effluent moves out through perforated EDF pipe and percolates down through soil, where bacteria break down remaining contaminants before the water reaches groundwater. The soil is the treatment system; the pipe just distributes.

The Aggregate Standard

Worth knowing, because it’s unusually specific and it tells you something about how the field works.

Under 420-3-1-.04(6), drain media must be hard, clean gravel or rock washed under pressure over a screen, with a hardness of 3 or greater on the Mohs scale. The rule illustrates this memorably: aggregate that can scratch a copper penny without leaving residual rock material on the coin.

Properly sized loose aggregate runs 1/4 inch minimum to 2.5 inches maximum, and must be durable and inert, maintain its integrity without collapsing or disintegrating over time, generate no harmful leachate, and not be detrimental to the system or the environment.

The reason for all that: the aggregate creates void space for effluent to distribute through before it meets soil. Material that breaks down or clogs defeats the purpose.

What Decides What You Can Have

Percolation rate. Slower than 240 MPI requires advanced treatment. Faster than 5 MPI also requires it, because effluent moving too quickly gets inadequate contact time.

Bedrock depth. Hard bedrock less than 12 inches from natural ground surface requires advanced treatment.

Seasonal saturation. Less than 6 inches to seasonal saturation requires advanced treatment.

Mine spoil. Present at natural grade to 48 inches within the field area requires advanced treatment.

If Any Part Sits Above Grade

A definition worth knowing. Under 420-3-1-.04(36), an Engineered OSS includes any system with a septic tank followed by a disposal field where any portion of the field protrudes above the unaltered natural soil surface.

So if your design requires fill or a mound to achieve adequate separation, engineer design follows automatically — regardless of what the soil does.

Alabama’s complication is that shrink-swell clay produces genuine seasonal variation. A field on heavy clay may look and behave differently in February than in August without anything being wrong. The test is comparison and persistence — is the field area wetter than the rest of the yard, and does it stay wet noticeably longer? Wet ground plus odor isn’t seasonal.
